Dear friends and neighbours,

Canada Day is just around the corner, and it is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the people and communities that make our country strong.  My office is offering Happy Canada Day signs for residents of Oakville East to celebrate Canada Day and show their Canadian pride. If you would like to pick up a lawn sign from our constituency office, please complete this form.

As the Member of Parliament for Oakville East, I have made strengthening community safety one of my priorities. Our government promised to introduce reforms to address bail and sentencing, and these changes have now become law through the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act (Bill C-14).

The Bail and Sentencing Reform Act introduce reforms to the Criminal Code, including stricter bail and tougher sentencing laws, that:

  • Make bail stricter and harder to obtain, including in cases of repeat and violent offending.

  • Create new reverse onuses, meaning the starting point is detention, and the accused would have to prove why they should be released on bail.

  • Toughen sentencing laws for repeat and violent crime, including car theft and extortion, meaning those found guilty can spend more time in prison.

  • Direct judges to order consecutive sentences for repeat violent offending, for auto theft and break and enter, and extortion and arson, which means serving one sentence after another instead of serving sentences for multiple offences at the same time.

  • Apply a new aggravating factor to crimes against first responders, retail theft, and theft or mischief that harms essential infrastructure.

Public safety is fundamental to the well-being of our communities. Safe, resilient communities attract people, families, businesses, and investment, and enable greater certainty and prosperity.  These new Criminal Code Reforms will provide law enforcement and the courts with additional tools to keep Canadians safe and will strengthen Oakville East and communities across Canada.

At the same time, many families continue to feel pressure from the rising cost of everyday essentials, particularly at the grocery store.

That is why our government recently launched the country's first-ever National Food Security Strategy, a long-term plan backed by more than $3 billion in investments over the next decade to strengthen Canada's food supply chains, support Canadian food production, increase competition in the grocery sector and help improve affordability for Canadians at the check-out counter.

Investments will help independent grocers compete more effectively, support food processing businesses looking to expand, and encourage year-round production of fruits and vegetables through greenhouse and indoor growing technologies. The strategy also includes efforts to reduce unnecessary red tape throughout the agricultural supply chain so food can move more efficiently from farms to store shelves.

For families in Oakville East and across Canada, these measures will build a more resilient food system while helping to improve access to affordable, high-quality food.
Whether it is strengthening community safety or helping Canadians manage the cost of living, our government’s focus remains on building stronger, safer, and more affordable communities.

Sincerely yours,

Hon. Anita Anand,
Member of Parliament, Oakville East
