I hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend and were able to spend time with family, friends, and loved ones. Moments like these are an important reminder of the strength of our community and the importance of looking out for one another.

That same focus on supporting one another is guiding the work we are doing to make life more affordable and to build a stronger future here at home.

One of the most pressing challenges I hear about from residents in Oakville East is housing. This week, Canada’s new government announced a new partnership with Ontario aimed at building more homes, improving infrastructure, and lowering costs for families.

Through this partnership, taxes and fees on new homes in Ontario could be reduced by up to $200,000. This includes removing the full 13 per cent HST on new homes valued up to $1 million, along with additional relief for homes up to $1.5 million. At the same time, both levels of government are working together to lower development charges, which are a significant upfront cost that can slow down or prevent new housing projects. Reducing these costs will help get more homes built, faster, in Oakville East and across Ontario.

Building homes is only part of the picture. As communities grow, we also need the infrastructure to support them. That is why this partnership also includes continued work on major transit projects across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, including new and expanded lines that will help connect people to jobs, reduce commute times, and support new housing in the years ahead.

As we move forward with these investments, there is also a clear focus on supporting Canadian workers and businesses. Through a Buy Canadian approach, we are prioritising Canadian materials and expertise in major projects, helping to strengthen our economy while creating good jobs here at home.

We know building healthy communities is also important to Canadians and last week Prime Minister Mark Carney launched A Force of Nature: Canada’s Strategy to Protect Nature, a $3.8 billion investment to protect and restore critical habitats, ensure industrial strategies complement our conservation efforts, and mobilise new capital for nature. Our new strategy will fund up to 14 new marine protected and conserved areas, 10 new national parks and and 15 national urban parks. It will be used to develop Canada’s first National Water Security Strategy to ensure healthy freshwater ecosystems and reliable access to clean, safe drinking water.

At the same time, we are continuing to take steps to support families more directly. With the passage of Bill C-15, the National School Food Program is now permanent. This is an important milestone that ensures stable, long-term support so that more children have access to nutritious meals at school each day. It is expected to reach up to 400,000 additional children across Canada, while also helping families manage the rising cost of groceries.

This is how our government is building Canada strong: building more homes, investing in the infrastructure on which communities rely, strengthening community health and making sure families have the support they need day to day.
