Today, on Earth Day, we are reminded of the responsibility we share to protect the natural environment that defines our country and shapes our communities. Here in Oakville, we see firsthand how important it is to preserve our green spaces, waterways, and local ecosystems for future generations.

In a world that is becoming more uncertain and divided, Canada’s new government is focused on what we can control: building a stronger, more independent, and more sustainable country. As we do that work, protecting our land and water must remain at the centre of our efforts.

Last month, Prime Minister Carney launched A Force of Nature: Canada’s Strategy to Protect Nature, backed by a $3.8 billion investment. The strategy is focused on protecting and restoring critical habitats, supporting Indigenous-led conservation, and ensuring that as we build and grow, we do so in a way that respects and preserves the environment around us.

It includes measures to expand national parks, marine conservation areas, and urban parks, while working toward protecting 30 per cent of Canada’s lands and waters by 2030. It also supports Indigenous Guardians programs, strengthens protections for species at risk, and invests in restoring important ecosystems, including salmon populations and freshwater systems.

This work reflects a broader understanding that protecting nature is not only an environmental responsibility, but also essential to building a strong and sustainable economy for the future.

That same focus on supporting Canadians in meaningful and practical ways continues across other areas as well.

This week, we announced a temporary suspension of the federal Fuel Excise Tax on gasoline and diesel, in effect from April 20 to September 7. This is expected to lower prices at the pump by about 10 cents per litre for gasoline and 4 cents per litre for diesel, providing immediate relief for households and small businesses.

In Oakville, where many rely on their vehicles for daily life, this kind of relief can make a meaningful difference. It also helps reduce costs for local businesses and workers, particularly in sectors that depend on transportation.

As we look ahead, there are also important supports in place to help families manage the cost of living.

On June 5th, eligible Canadians will receive a one-time top-up to the GST/HST credit as part of the transition to the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. Beginning in July, this benefit will provide increased quarterly support to more than 12 million Canadians, helping families keep up with the cost of everyday essentials.

We are also continuing to invest in children and families in a lasting way. With the National School Food Program now permanent, more students across Canada will have access to nutritious meals at school each day, while helping families lower grocery costs at home.

Looking ahead to the summer, the Canada Summer Jobs Bank is now open and i encourage young people in our community to explore the availible oppurtunites including here in Oakville East. Canada Summer Jobs are a valuable way to gain experience and build skills for the future.

From protecting our environment, to lowering costs, to supporting families and young people, these efforts are how we build a stronger, more sustainable future for all Canadians.
