This past weekend, we lost the Honourable John McCallum. A dedicated public servant, John served Canadians with distinction as a Cabinet Minister, Member of Parliament, and Ambassador. John was a dear friend and mentor to me, and I am grateful to have been guided by his generosity, warmth and wisdom.  He was a true servant of his country and a much-loved member of our Oakville community, and we all will miss him greatly.

Our Parliamentary session has now adjourned for the summer. Our government came to Parliament with a clear mandate, and in just a few weeks we:

  • Delivered a middle-class tax cut for 22 million Canadians

  • Passed legislation to remove interprovincial trade barriers and speed up approvals for major projects

  • Introduced the Strong Borders Act

  • Approved government spending to enable significant new investments in national defence.

  • Introduced legislation to protect Canadians and bolster cyber security

These accomplishments reflect our commitment to building a stronger, more resilient Canada.

This week, I am in Europe with Prime Minister Carney for the Canada-EU Summit and the 2025 NATO Summit.

We announced the New EU-Canada Strategic Partnership of the Future: a partnership rooted in shared values and the rules-based international system, and strategically aimed to pursue common interests. As part of this agreement, Canada and the EU also signed the Security and Defence Partnership, which provides a framework for dialogue and co-operation in security and defence priorities.

Following discussions with our allies and partners here at the 2025 NATO Summit, Canada and our fellow NATO member states have agreed to a new Defence Investment Pledge of investing 5 per cent of annual GDP by 2035 to ensure our individual and collective security. The commitment aligns with Canada’s own strategic defence and security goals and will ensure that Canada is prepared to protect our values and defend our sovereignty.

This follows on Canada’s commitment to boost our defence spending to ensure we reach NATO's target of 2 per cent of the total GDP by next March.

Representing Canada at the 2025 NATO Summit
As a founding member of NATO, Canada has always been committed to multilateralism and collective defence. Canada will reach 2% of GDP this year, and as of today, we have joined all NATO allies in committing to reach 5% by 2035.
