Last week I joined Prime Minister Mark Carney as he convened Canada’s first ever Investment Summit in partnership with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) and the Public Sector Pension Investment Board (PSP Investments). Bringing together investors, business leaders, and financial institutions from nearly 30 countries, the Summit unleashed nearly $500 billion of new investment in Canadian businesses and infrastructure. These investments will create thousands of new high-paying careers, bolster our strategic autonomy, and help us build a stronger, more independent, more resilient Canadian economy for all – in Oakville East and communities right across the country.
The Prime Minister also announced the new Productivity Mega Deduction. Building on Budget 2025’s Productivity Super-Deduction, this new tax incentive will increase the amount of assets for which businesses can immediately expense 100% of costs from roughly 15% of assets to more than 65%. We are also making immediate expensing permanent. For Oakville East businesses this will lower the after-tax cost of capital investment and allow them to recover business costs sooner.
As a result of these new incentives, Canada’s marginal effective tax rate on new business investment will fall from roughly 13% to 6.4%, the lowest of any major economy in the world and less than half the rate in the United States.
As the House of Commons returns for the fall session this week, I continue to focus on issues that matter to our Oakville East community. This fall, that includes creating opportunities for young people, helping families manage costs, protecting affordable housing, and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
One way we are building for the future is by helping young Canadians gain the skills and experience they need. The new Team Canada Strong Youth Placements program will connect young people with paid placements of up to four months in the skilled trades, beginning in early 2027. Backed by $880 million over five years, the program will give young people hands-on experience and help create pathways toward apprenticeships and long-term careers.
Organizations interested in providing these opportunities can submit an Expression of Interest by October 23. I encourage organizations in Oakville East to learn more and consider how they can help young people take their first steps into the skilled trades while building up their own workforce. I know that families and businesses are closely managing costs today. This week legislation was introduced in the House of Commons to extend the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax until January 31, 2027, followed by a 50% rate reduction from February 1 to March 31, 2027. Since April 20, the pause has reduced the federal excise tax by 10 cents per litre on gasoline and 4 cents per litre on diesel and aviation fuel, providing savings at the pump and helping businesses that rely on transportation.
Ensuring families and individuals have access to affordable housing in their community is another important part of this work. Our government has launched the $1.5 billion Canada Rental Protection (CRP) Fund to protect existing affordable rental housing by helping community housing providers acquire at-risk rental properties and keep them affordable over the long term. The online intake portal is now open for submissions.
There is important work ahead this fall, and I will continue working to ensure that Oakville East is represented as we build a stronger future for our community and our country.

Art in My Garden
It was wonderful to tour Art in my Garden in Olde Oakville to see the many pieces of art on display throughout the community. Started by local resident, Rachel Williams, Art in My Garden is now in its sixth year, bringing local artists and our community together through creativity and art.
Oak Park Neighbourhood Fall Fair
Earlier this month, my office joined the Oak Park Neighbourhood Fall Fair for a wonderful day of family, fun and connection. The event brought neighbours together while highlighting the many programs and resources available to local residents.
National Water Strategy
Our government is developing Canada’s first National Water Security Strategy to protect the fresh water our communities, economy, and environment depend on against growing risks like floods and droughts. Canadians from every region, along with Indigenous and government partners, are invited to share their perspectives on the Canada Water Agency website by October 25, 2026.
United Nations General Assembly
This week, I am at the United Nations General Assembly, meeting with partners from around the world and representing Canada on the global stage.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and I are focused on strengthening Canada at home, building the relationships we need abroad and creating more opportunities for Canadians.
