Dear friends and neighbours,
Our government is focused on what we can control: strengthening our national economy, diversifying our partnerships abroad and building a strong Canada for all Canadians.
There is no question that the past year has brought uncertainty for Oakville East families and businesses. This period of economic volatility and trade tensions is having a direct impact in our community, and across Canada. Despite these challenges, Canada’s economy is showing resilience, and I want to share encouraging updates on our economy and the work our government is doing to create more opportunities for businesses here in Oakville East.
Our economy grew by 3.3 per cent in the second quarter, the strongest growth in the G7. Productivity also rose by 4 per cent, the largest increase since 2020, and Canada has added 139,000 jobs since May.
We are also making progress in opening new markets for Canadian businesses. Non-U.S. exports have increased by 17 per cent, or $33 billion, over the past year. Nearly one in three Canadian exports now go to markets outside the United States, the highest share in 40 years.
For businesses in Oakville East, having more markets to sell to means more opportunities to grow, invest, and create good local jobs. That is why our government is working to strengthen Canada's trading relationships around the world.
Over the past year, Canada has signed more than 20 trade and security agreements across five continents. We recently concluded negotiations on a Canada-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and signed the Canada-Ecuador Free Trade Agreement, opening new opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers.
Through Team Canada Trade Missions, we have also secured nearly $12 billion in commercial deals, including $1.7 billion during the most recent mission to Japan.
There is more work ahead. Canada is continuing negotiations with partners including India, the Philippines, Thailand, Qatar, ASEAN, and Mercosur. By diversifying our trading relationships, we can create more opportunities for local and national Canadian businesses and reduce our reliance on any single market.
We are also investing in Canadians here at home. Through Team Canada Strong, the Government of Canada is investing $6 billion to recruit, train, and hire up to 100,000 skilled trades workers, helping ensure Canadians have access to good-paying careers while building the homes, infrastructure, and major projects our country needs.
As we work toward long-term economic growth, we continue to support Canadians with the cost of living through measures such as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, the middle-class tax cut, and the extended pause on the fuel excise tax.
Much work is still ahead, but there are also real reasons for optimism. Canada has the people, businesses, resources, and talent to build a strong and competitive economy.
I will continue working to ensure Oakville East is part of that growth and that our community has the opportunities and support it needs to succeed.

National Water Strategy
Our government is developing Canada’s first National Water Security Strategy to protect the fresh water our communities, economy, and environment depend on against growing risks like floods and droughts. Canadians from every region, along with Indigenous and government partners, are invited to share their perspectives on the Canada Water Agency website by October 25, 2026.
Canada Summer Jobs
As another Canada Summer Jobs season comes to a close, I’m pleased to see the impact these opportunities have had right here in Oakville East. This year, more than $1.4 million was invested in our community, supporting 349 local youth with valuable work experience, new skills, and connections to help build their futures. Thank you to the local businesses and community organizations that opened their doors to young people this summer.
